Conversion projects can involve quite a number
of complicated possibilities. There are often several ways to accomplish a
given conversion. High Impact, along with our associates, stack up
considerable knowledge and experience in charting out the best
course. The correct mix and match will result in the lowest cost, simplest
and most reliable installation possible. Do not hesitate to call or
e-mail with your specific application.

Technical Overview of stick Transmission
Conversions
Transmission/Bellhousing/Engine
interface
The Bellhousing bolt pattern must match the
engine, and the transmission bolt pattern must match the bell housing. The
length of the bell housing must be such that the input shaft of the transmission
fits correctly into the throughout bearing. It is possible to mix and
match various length transmission input shafts, factory and aftermarket
bell housings, and bell housing adapters.
Clutch/Clutch Linkage
The flywheel must fit inside the bellhousing,
bolt up to the crankshaft and interface with starter. The pressure plate
then must bolt up to the flywheel. The clutch disc must fit the pressure
plate and the input splines of the transmission. Clutch linkage,
mechanical or hydraulic, must be selected and configured.
Transmission / Transfer case
The trans must bolt up to the Tcase, and the
shafts must connect and all must seal up. The output shaft of the
transmission must interface with the input shaft of the transfer case,
either directly or using a spud shaft or coupler. There is
generally an adapter between the transmission main case and the transfer
case, and there are a wide variety of both factory adapters and
aftermarket adapters to make this match.
High Impact:
Reducing complexity through communication
All of the possible variations comprise an
extensive science in which High Impact and our associates are notably good
at. The correct mix and match will result in the lowest cost, simplest and
most reliable installation possible. While it is beyond the scope of this
article to detail all the possibilities, please do not hesitate to
call or e-mail with your specific application
Whatever manual transmission you choose, when you are
going from an automatic to a stick, there are several factors that must be
considered in every case
A flywheel, pressure plate, clutch disc and pilot
bearing will be needed: An automatic does not use these.
Clutch Actuation: In order to convert from
auto to stick, you will need to add a clutch pedal. The easiest way is
usually to get the pedals, brackets and linkage parts from the stick shift
version of your truck out of a boneyard. Or a setup out of a wrecked truck
that can easily be made to fit your truck. If these are not available, it
is possible to fabricate a clutch pedal mount and rig a linkage. In this
case, some ingenuity will be required. Two general types of linkage
are used: Mechanical (a system of rods and crank arm assembly, or a cable)
or hydraulic (A master cylinder, hose and slave cylinder). Hydraulic
systems have two general type of slave cylinders: Internal, which go
inside the bellhousing concentric with the trans input shaft and directly
activate the clutch, or external which mount off to the side and push on a
pivot arm which moves a throwout bearing which actuates the clutch. While
there ere are pros and cons to each method, the decision often is resolved
by which one will be easier and less costly to make work in a specific
conversion. Factory bellhousing frequently are made to work with one or
the other, but not both. Many aftermarket conversion bellhousings are
available greatly expanding the options.
A Bellhousing needs to be selected that will work with the
transmission and clutch actuation system chosen.
At High Impact, we strive to engineer complete conversion
systems that then give the self-installer or shop a set of parts
that will work together to solve most of the above issues. The transmission
itself, the bellhousing. flywheel, pressure plate, pilot bearing, throwout
bearing, slave cylinder transfer case adapter, in some cases special
lubricants are all parts we routinely match up and supply as kits.
The clutch pedal, mounting, and mechanical linkages are generally up to
you, however we have in the past found junkyard sources and supplied such
parts. We can supply master-slave cylinder pairs that will match one
another volumetrically (so the motion of the master cylinder is in correct
relationship to the slave), and will fit most easily in the vehicle
application. And we offer free tech support to customers so you can always
call and discuss possibilities and get suggestions of ways to resolve the
details that sometimes come up in conversion projects.
