It has been observed that stick trannies have more "hold-back" (compression braking) when going steep downhill off road.

Compression braking is simply a function of gear ratio. Since manual truck/jeep transmissions have lower numerical first gear ratios (between 4  and 5 to one typically) than automatics (2.45 to 3.06 to one), they have more compression braking.  And a “granny tranny” (5 to 7 to one 1st gear) will have even more. The torque converter tends to slip a bit when performing compression braking, making matters worse. An automatic with stock gearing will have really poor compression braking for off road use. Get up to a 50 to one crawl ratio, and with some brake assist, you get quite satisfactory control. Get your crawl ratio down to 100 to one or greater, and you will be able to idle down the steepest slope or rock that your rig will stick to, foot off the brake, at a slow walking pace. Even with an automatic.

You can use a low geared transfer case, such as an ATLAS II.

You can do a dual transfer case set-up such as a DOUBLER.

The Premium no compromise set up uses a Klune-V Extreme Underdrive.
