Product Description:

The PCS Universal Automatic Transmission Controller is a fully programmable transmission control system. Through a friendly PC Windows interface users are able to program transmission settings based on speed, engine load, engine speed and other parameters. This powerful unit allows users to control every type of electronic automatic transmission from Ford, Nissan, GM, Toyota, Chrysler and many other manufacturers.

Automatic transmissions have been mass produced only in electronic versions for many years without a satisfactory aftermarket solution.  A unique approach to engineering in this field allows this unit to control all types of electronic automatic transmissions at a low cost: Simply change the software, and it controls a different transmission.

What is involved, wiring wise, to install one in an older, non-computer controlled vehicle?

Standard applications will come with a wiring harness specifically built for your model transmission. It will have the correct connectors to plug into the trans directly.

Minimum external connections are: Switched ignition power, vehicle speed sensor (VSS) and throttle Position Sensor (TPS), and Ground. That's four wires.

This along with the software that will come loaded in your PCM will be sufficient to get in and drive in full automatic mode.

What does it take to program one?

The unit will come with basic programming already done. Install the trans and wire it up and it will run in full automatic mode. To tune the transmission shift points, shift firmness, torque converter lock-up: You will need a PC computer. You will be supplied with a disc with programming software on it (or this software can be downloaded off the web).  You hook the PCM to the computer via an adapter cable (which can be supplied in your kit). Fire up the computer and the programming software. Inside there is a screen which you can read MPH, RPM, what gear you are in, trans pressure, and lots of other things. You open up tables where you go in and change the MPH, RPM and throttle position numbers that tell it when to shift, how hard, etc. You will get a full programming manual with the kit

Selectable shifting modes (ex. Power, towing, economy)

The PCM has two complete sets of programming tables. One use of this feature is to have two sets of shift programs, which can be selected by flipping a switch.

Full Manual operation at a flip of a switch?

It is also possible to program the unit such that one set of shift table gives full manual operation. Different gears are then selected by push buttons, where you can directly select the gear you would like to go into. The transmission will go directly into he gear selected by pushbutton, and will stay in that gear until another button is selected or a return to full auto operation is selected. These features will require additional wiring: You will need to install shift buttons (on your dash, or on a shift pod near your hand, etc) and you will need to wire in these switches to the harness.

Steering wheel electronic upshift-downshift buttons?

It is also possible to program the unit  to shift up and down sequentially thought he gears by pressing an upshift button or a down shift button. This could be operated by an shifting paddle (so it would operate similar to a ratchet shifter), or could be buttons mounted on the steering wheel. Is is even possible to wire and program the unit so that existing steering wheel buttons (such as some vehicles have radio or cruise control buttons already there) can be set up to multifunction, and become upshift-downshift buttons when the trans is switched to full manual operation, and revert to their normal functions when the trans is shifted back to automatic operation. There are quite a few variations of this possible, according to your imagination, and what you would like to do. Involves setting up and installing the switches and buttons, wiring them, and programming he computer to tell it what to do with them. We have seen it done where the PCM controls shifting between an OD automatic transmission AND an add-on gear-splitter for fully automatic integrated control adding up to 8 speeds.
