Installation & Application Notes: 

NV4500 Replacing an Automatic Transmission:

The package above forms a  system is designed to replace a Ford automatic transmission with an NV4500 5 speed.  All of the major components needed are supplied for this conversion, with the exception of the clutch pedal assembly. 

There are part number variations in some of the components in this kit due to the year of your 6.9L Diesel engine. We will want your details to help us engineer your system with the exact right parts.

Fitting an NV4500 into a Ford

The factory 5 speed  transmission used in 90s HD Fords are ZF 5 speeds. This ZF is a decent trans, however does not seem to be quite up to the requirements placed on it by more demanding Ford owners.   We have developed a conversion system to install a NEW NV4500  into Ford Diesel applications providing improved reliability and load handling. This transmission as supplied  has been built and modified from a NEW OEM NV4500 to fit in your Ford truck. 

Dual Mass vs Solid Flywheel: 

We have found it simplest to engineer these conversions around a solid (rather than dual mass) flywheel. Dual mass flywheels will not work properly on engines they are not specifically tuned for. You can take a stock engine with a dual mass flywheel, perform aftermarket modifications on the engine, and shortly thereafter the dual mass flywheel may fail: It is not set up for your engine now that you have changed it. 

It is simpler, and therefore less chance of error, to specify parts for stock and modified engines when using solid flywheels. If you definitely prefer a dual mass system, we will work with you to engineer a system for your application. Dual mass flywheel clutch systems tend to be somewhat more costly.

Clutch Pedal assembly

These parts are available from the dealer, or if you prefer, a junkyard. You will want the stock bracket, pedals and linkage components from your same-year  stick-equipped vehicle. The master cylinder we supply will fit this assembly. If desired for convenience, we can attempt to source these parts from a dealer, however most likely at a higher cost than you can buy them direct from the dealer.

4WD applications

Married Transfer case*

Applications with a "Married" (bolted directly to the transmission tail adapter)* will use an adapter for Ford  style transfer cases 1970 and up. Adapters for other transfer cases are available, contact High Impact.

Divorced Transfer Case*

Applications with "Divorced" (mounted separately from the trans and linked by a short driveshaft*) transfer cases will be supplied with a 2WD NV4500 with a short, fixed yoke tail and will have no speedo provisions (Your speedo is either on your Tcase or your rear axle)

2WD

The (Brand New) NV4500 are standard supplied with a Dodge style slip yoke, and provisions for a choice of mechanical or electrical speedo. A short fixed yoke output is available, however the only speedo provisions are for none or GM pulse sender

Drive Shaft(s)

You will need to have your driveshaft(s) modified for length. A local driveshaft shop is usually available to do this. If necessary, we can do it, however it is better to install the unit FIRST, then measure and build/modify driveshafts

Crossmember

You may need to relocate your crossmember, this can usually be done by re-drilling the frame and bolting into the desired location. You will need to drill the crossmember for the bolts to the larger NV4500 transmission mount

Stick Shift

It will be necessary to cut a hole in your floorboard to accommodate the stick shift. A simple boot can be mounted over the hole to dress this.
