Stick Transmission Conversion Options

General Info: Stick Trans Conversions

Converting from one type of stick trans to another, or from an Auto trans to a stick trans.

NV4500 5 speed conversion

Even though the NV4500 never came in a Ford truck, it is actually a cost effective conversion when compared to the German ZF 5 speed used in Fords. The NV4500 is generally considered to be the better transmission.

ZF 5 Speed

We also carry these conversions, if you prefer.

NP435, T18, T19 "Granny" 4 speeds

These are all available to fit Ford standard bell housings. Adapters are available to most if not all popular transfer cases

Automatic Trans Conversion Options

General Info: Auto Trans conversions

Converting from one type of auto trans to another, or from a stick to an Auto trans, how to make an auto trans live.

C6 "Bad Boy" - 3 Speed Automatic

This is the stout one, for the high horsepower, high abuse Ford big block applications where overdrive is not required.

AOD "Bad Boy"  - Automatic with Overdrive

Our "BadBoy" AOD can be built to handle most any small block V8, and makes an excellent Overdrive Automatic conversion into older trucks as no computer is required to control this trans version.

700R4 " Bad Boy" Automatic with Overdrive

Like the AOD, no computer required. A more costly conversion into a Ford, however at times the characteristics of the 700R4 make it more desirable

E4OD "Bad Boy" Automatic with Overdrive

This is the true HD Overdrive Auto trans for Ford Diesel and big block applications. Our "Bad Boy" version (with external programmable computer control) corrects reliability issues found with factory versions.

Overdrive Conversion options

There are two basic ways to accomplish getting an overdrive into your Ford truck: Converting to a trans with overdrive, or adding a gear splitter/overdrive unit. This subject is covered in detail in:

Overdrives, Underdrives & Gear Splitters

Here is a summary of recommended options, based on what trans your Ford has in it, or what you want it to have in it:

Ford with standard truck 4 speed trans

Such as a T18, T19, NP435.  Recommended options are:

Ranger Overdrive/Gearsplitter

Add-on manual 2 speed gearbox, will give you a total of 8 forward gears used with a 4speed listed above.

NV4500 5 speed conversion

Then NV4500 is considered the 5 speed of choice used in Full-Size pickups. It was supplied as standard equipment in GM and Dodge HD trucks. The Fords "equivalent" was the German ZF 5 speed, however these tend to be more expensive to build and work on, as well as not having as good a reputation as the NV4500. Unless you are getting a GOOD ZF used that you KNOW is good, for a very good price, we feel it is a wiser investment of a similar amount of money to use an NV4500. We can supply the ZF as well, if you really want one.

Pros/Cons: The NV4500 is fully synchronized in all forward gears, many early 4 speeds had non synchro 1st gear. The NV4500 set up tends to be quieter and more civilized, whereas the Ranger/4speed combo offers more gearing possibilities closer together (an advantage in hauling HEAVY loads in mountainous terrain). A truck used for work/heavy hauling or towing might benefit more from the Ranger. The Ranger is lower cost.

Ford truck w 3 speed automatic

NV4500 5 Speed - a popular conversion for those wanting to go to a stick

AOD "Bad Boy" automatic w/ overdrive - Medium duty Automatic-Overdrive trans suitable for stout small block V8 and occasional heavy towing. Substantially lower cost then E4OD systems, and the bad boy version is sufficiently robust for most enthusiast applications.

E4OD "Bad Boy": programmable Heavy Duty automatic w/ overdrive. Computer controlled, conversion system include a stand-alone computer setup.

Transfer case Upgrade Options

(Ford) NP203

Fairly stout if it is already in there, but limited due to the chain front axle drive. If it is already in your truck, consider adding a Doubler

(Ford) NP205

This is the rugged one, all gear drive and pretty close to bulletproof. If the 1.96:1 ratio is not enough, consider teaming a 205 with a Klune-V Extreme Underdrive

(Ford) NP208

This case is acceptable for use in light and medium duty off road use. Extreme abuse should consider conversion to the NP205 or NP205+Klune-V

(Ford) Borg Warner

These cases vary from model to model, however will generally  acceptable for use in light and medium duty off road use in the size and weight vehicle they came in. Extreme abuse should consider conversion to the NP205 or NP205+Klune-V

Atlas II Transfer Case

This case is  is excellent for use in light and medium duty off road use in full size trucks. Heavy duty off road use in a full size Ford should opt for the 32 spline front output upgrade option.  Extreme abuse should consider conversion to the NP205 or NP205+Klune-V.

To get beyond this, we suggest checking out the Atlas + Klune-V or Doubler

"Ultimate" Klune-V and Doubler gearing

This type of Ultimate gearing option will provide the greatest amount of available gearing options. see High Impact - Optimal Gearing Enchantment

Klune-V Extreme Underdrive

Available for all transfer case applications listed above

Doubler

If you already have a transmission with a NP203, this may be the high-value gearing upgrade. Uses the NP203 gear reduction section and couples this to any of the transfer cases listed above.
